Description
This watercolor is a portrait of a Hawaiian woman with beach flora around her. In the Hawaiian language "makai" is used to describe the direction towards the water, or beach. I chose flowers that are either symbolic or endemic to Hawaii. The climate of most of the beaches on the Big Island of Hawaii is very sunny and hot. I captured that feeling by having shadows across the woman's face while she finds respite in the shade.
